Document notarization

What documents can I bring?

People often need a notary for personal, family, property, or business paperwork. Common requests include:

  • Affidavits and sworn statements.
  • Prepared powers of attorney.
  • Parental travel consent letters and school forms that require notarization.
  • Prepared property documents, agreements, and authorization forms.

Call with the document type before booking. The required notarial act, certificate wording, identification, and any witnesses must be suitable for your document. Listing a document here does not guarantee it can be notarized.

Identification for notarization

What ID should I bring?

Bring your original, unexpired identification. Virginia’s documentary identification standard requires a photograph of your face and your signature. Approved document types include:

  • U.S. passport book or passport card.
  • Foreign passport.
  • State-issued driver’s license or identification card.
  • Alien registration card with photograph (green card).
  • U.S. military identification card.
  • Certificate of U.S. citizenship or certificate of naturalization.

If your ID is expired, your name differs from the document, or you do not have one of these documents, call before visiting. Virginia permits certain other identification methods and limited exceptions; eligibility must be checked for your circumstances.

Before your appointment

Your visit checklist.

  1. Bring the complete document. Include every page and the receiving organization’s instructions. Complete the information you are responsible for before your visit, leaving the notarial certificate for the notary.
  2. Bring each signer and their ID. For this in-person service, everyone whose signature needs notarization must appear before the notary.
  3. Check before signing. Some notarial acts require signing in the notary’s presence. If you have already signed, call to discuss the required act.
  4. Ask about witnesses and fees. Confirm any witness arrangements, appointment time, and charges when you call.

Do you offer weekend and emergency notary appointments?

Regular hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, and Saturday–Sunday, 1:00 PM–5:00 PM, in local Virginia time. Call for 24-hour emergency service outside these hours; arrangements are subject to availability.

Can someone bring my document without me?

For an in-person notarization of your signature, you must attend. Sending your document and ID with a friend or relative does not replace your personal appearance.

Can you certify copies of every document?

No. Copy certification has limits, including documents held by a court. Call with the exact document type. For a birth, death, or marriage record, ask the issuing records office how to obtain an official certified copy.

Can you help choose or fill out my legal document?

Our notary service does not include legal advice, choosing a legal form, or preparing a legal document. Ask the receiving organization or a qualified attorney about the correct document and its legal effect.

How do I book, and what will it cost?

Call (240) 653-7949 with the document type, number of signers, and preferred appointment time. Confirm the applicable charges before your visit. For an urgent request, tell us the deadline when you call.
